The narrow host range of Mycobacterium leprae and the fact that it is refractory to growth in culture has limited research on biologic understanding leprosy. Host genetic factors are thought influence susceptibility infection as well disease progression. We performed a two-stage genomewide association study by genotyping 706 patients 1225 controls using Human610-Quad BeadChip (Illumina). We then tested three independent replication sets for an between presence leprosy 93 single-nucleotide...
Background Mild retinopathy (microaneurysms or dot-blot hemorrhages) is observed in persons without diabetes hypertension and may reflect microvascular disease other organs. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of mild diabetes. Methods A working group agreed on phenotype harmonization, covariate selection analytic plans for within-cohort GWAS. An inverse-variance weighted fixed effects meta-analysis was performed with GWAS results from six cohorts 19,411 Caucasians. The...
Niemann-Pick C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1) is a protein localized in jejunal enterocytes that critical for intestinal cholesterol absorption. The uptake of phytosterols and into absorptive the intestine not fully defined on molecular level, role NPC1L1 maintaining whole body homeostasis known. null mice had substantially reduced sitosterol, with dramatically plasma phytosterol levels. were completely resistant to diet-induced hypercholesterolemia, lipoprotein hepatic profiles similar those wild type...
Previous studies have suggested that breast cancer risk factors are associated with estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone (PR) expression status of the tumors.
Genetic variations, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in microRNAs (miRNA) or the miRNA binding sites may affect dependent gene expression regulation, which has been implicated various cancers, including breast cancer, and alter individual susceptibility to cancer. We investigated associations between related SNPs cancer risk. First we evaluated 2,196 a case-control study combining nine genome wide association studies (GWAS). Second, further 42 with suggestive evidence for using...
Data for multiple common susceptibility alleles breast cancer may be combined to identify women at different levels of risk. Such stratification could guide preventive and screening strategies. However, empirical evidence genetic risk is lacking. We investigated the value using 77 cancer-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) stratification, in a study 33 673 cases 381 control European origin. tested all possible pair-wise multiplicative interactions constructed 77-SNP polygenic...
A lead-free high-Curie-point Aurivillius-phase ferroelectric ceramic, CaBi2Nb2O9, has been fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). It a Curie point (943 °C) that is much higher than previously reported (650 °C). The piezoelectric constant d33 of the SPS textured material was nearly three times ordinary-fired (OF) materials and stable up to 800 °C (see Figure). These ceramics are promising candidates for high- temperature applications.
